I meant literally. If you sneeze or cough, technically, a cloth should prevent that from travelling very far. Doesn't stop it completely. That's it. I've got WHIMS certification for masks actually. It IS like you say, there is no mask that actually fully stops anything virus size.
Masks don't stop most droplets at all or shorten their distance of travel, they just redirect them out the sides of the mask where they still take their place in the building's airflow and deposit on surfaces. There are several peer reviewed publications over the past 18 months that demonstrate this. Anything less than a properly fit tested N95 on a clean shaven individual who is properly trained to use it is completely pointless.
