PSALM 62. For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

Theme: Placing all hope in God. Knowing that God is in control allows us to wait patiently for him to rescue us. True relief does not come when the problem is resolved because more problems are on the way! True relief comes from an enduring hope in God's ultimate salvation. Only then will all trials be resolved.

Author: David, possibly written during the days of Absalom's rebellion (2 Samuel 15--18)

1 Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. 2 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. 3 How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down— this leaning wall, this tottering fence? 4 Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. 5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. 6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7 My salvation and my honor depend on God ; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. 9 Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. 10 Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11 One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God, 12 and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; and, “You reward everyone according to what they have done.”

Study Notes:

62:3-6 David expressed his feelings to God and then reaffirmed his faith. Prayer can release our tensions in times of emotional stress. Trusting God to be our rock, salvation, and fortress (62:2) will change our entire outlook on life. No longer must we be held captive by resentment toward others when they hurt us. When we are resting in God's strength, nothing can shake us.

62:9-12 It is tempting to use honor, power, wealth, or prestige to measure people. We may even think that such people are really getting ahead in life. But on God's scales, these people are a "breath," a puff of air. What, then, can tip the scales when God weighs us? Trusting God, and working for him (62:12). Wealth, power, honor, or prestige add nothing to our value in God's eyes, but the faithful work we do for him has eternal value.

Yesterday I was touched by the comments on my morning Bible read post. I finally got it that God is truly working through us. I look for his work, and I felt his urging to do these, but I really didn't truly understand why. Yesterday, God worked to give me a glimpse of why. It also helped my understanding of why things are seeming to take so long. Oh, to have God's unlimited patience and love! God knows his own, and he will not abandon even one. Praise God!

Lord, thank you for your persistent work through us. Thank you that we obey your gentle urging, even when we don't fully understand why. Thank you for the glimpses of our purpose for you, and for the assurance that we are on the right path. Help us to be steadfast in your work. I love the way you work, Lord! And, I love the way you work through US. Truly. In the name of Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior I pray.
