In this day and age, a million dollars wouldn't last you as long as you think.
it would if you lived modestly. im currently paying $600/mo for rent, which means my yearly cost of living including everything else is around $25k per year.

You're at the mercy of your landlord and the real estate market to keep your housing cost so low. When the real estate market starts to go up, which it is currently in most of America, rent will also go up.
It's better to own your home before you drop out of the workforce. Then your only housing cost is real estate taxes and upkeep.

It's happening everywhere. Urban, suburban, and rural areas are all effected.
There's only a few places where real estate is declining, and that's largely the ultra-expensive cities that are losing people due to work from home.
