Needed to secure SCOTUS to ensure no attempts to meddle with military courts. Kavanaugh questioning was essential. US has been in a state of war against very broadly defined "terror" since Congress authorized it in 2001. Any treasonous acts committed since then = no criminal courts, but military tribunals
