You can't understand WW2 without going back to 1914 and working it through. It was not a perfectly normal situation that just happened to be taken over by a nutjob. It was the result of wrongly suppressing a country by several means over a period of time.
Germany did not start WW1 and they did not really lose it but they were forced to pay massive reparations - I think they were still paying in the 1980s. They had massive inflation. You literally needed to collect your pay and run to the shops to buy food because you would not have enough if you left it a day.
After WW1 much German land was confiscated. That left Germans living in foreign countries and in some of those they were treated badly. The Jews declared a holy business war on Germany. The rise in nationalism was sure to happen and the National Socialists rode that wave.
Still, I always wondered about Germany until UK Prime Minister Tony Blair dragged us into Iraq. Then I saw how it could happen. A war based on a lie but we did it anyway.
