Let me play devils advocate for a second here. Look at the tip where the "mask flap" is, right where it touches the string of his mask. This spot should be pressed against his skinsince the mask string is. So why is it so much brighter than his ear? One would think the color issue is due to the flap being off his face and thus a different angle to the sun. But this section should have blended in if thats the case. Additionally the sun is coming from behind him, meaning that the mask would have to be rolling backwards not forwards and we all should be able to guess it can't roll backwards more than his skin.
One could only conclude that the image was photoshopped before being placed onto Getty.
I didn't say they were, in fact, I am saying it couldn't. It couldn't because if the mask was pressed against the skin at all, the tag would be forced outwards making it darker, not lighter. so something else entirely is happening.

Lets take it further and run It through an image analyzer to detect "photoshopped" images. http://fotoforensics.com/analysis.php?id=5c24c9abab7df919ba7c807296d59007fee5ef30.248164&show=ela It appears this it at least doesn't appear to be photoshopped.
So for me it is still a mystery, but really doesn't make sense
