- This is not entirely correct. The left has made unions into communist regimes. and an excuse to increase the size of the government.
- 1873 Knights of Labor, ran by a Republican, believed in unions but saw many Marxists and communists join the ranks.
- Because of this, Samuel Gompers a moderate against socialism wanted to separate labor unions from political parties.
- in 1886 the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions striked which resulted in the Fair Labor Standards Act, establishing an eight-hour day and forty-hour week.
- Republicans created the Norris–Laguardia Act allowing workers to join unions.
- As more socialists and marxists joined the unions they began to convert the new unionism from a business into a political arm to help carry out their goals.
- 1933 Roosevelt and the Democrats (and half the republicans) passed National Industrial Recovery Act The reason many Republicans did't vote for this was that they saw at this time a massive government expansion and the dangers it presented. Many still voted for it as it gave collective power to the people.
