Someone was talking about dreams they believed to be prophetic. Someone, actually a couple people began to discredit their dreams as something you can’t trust and they said that Jesus never said any of those things were for us today. I commented with several scriptures from both old and new testament about both discerning the voice of God, testing the Spirits and prophecy and the powers of the Holy Spirit and they finally stopped retorting, yet I found this disturbing as most people as well as myself were both sharing personal experiences and scriptures as well as prayers and encouragement.

Ask yourself, why isn't God speaking to or through those people? Perhaps they don't have a personal relationship with Him, or maybe they are still in the nursing stage of learning the Bible. On the flip side I rarely believe people who say they are prophets. I don't discount them all but I don't jump on prophet bandwagons either.
That’s funny, I just got through basically writing the same as you with slightly differing words before reading what you wrote. It is necessary to test the spirits and pray for discernment in all things.before believing anything or anyone which could be questionable including dreams, prophetic or any pastors, even for understanding of scriptures. BI at times struggle with what is literal, visions, dreams, prophecy, history or parable and discerning them.
I firmly believe that the Holy Spirit dwells within us once we've been saved, and when I tell people I usually go by my gut feeling, I am 100% convinced it is the Holy Spirit leading me. It takes years of study, I believe to rightly divide the word of God. The Bible is a literal book and not up for interpretation so, to me, if it doesn't pass the Bible and gut test I just pass it by.
Amen
