I believe the spike protein damages a type of white blood cell called a type 2 macrophage. What this cell does is reduce inflammation after an inflammatory period produced by type 1 marcrophages. Type 2 macrophages are kind of a stand down and tidy up crew.
If they are missing, you can get prolonged inflammation.
