So I was just thinking about this... There was this huge campaign to stop bullying a few years ago right. Don't bully orientation, race, gender, certain religions, and weight or appearance generally. Obviously it was a catastrophic failure. It would seem based on recent events that bullying is human nature; because when offered a new group to bully by, let's call them the liberal click, they immediately jumped on it. So using their own logic if I wanted to start fat shaming again all I have to do is convince enough people that it is as you say a public health campaign or whatever the hell else reason I wanted. (But actually I am using a hyperbole here.)
Respectfully, I actually have to disagree with you about actually doing this because our food sources are a mess in America. It takes money and effort to avoid artificial sweeteners gmo and other crap trap that I am sure is contributing to a fair few weight problems. No that shouldn't stop people from trying to get healthy but I don't shaming is actually the answer, just look at how it has vax shame hasn't worked.
Thank you for your comments. I have some counter points. In regards to food problem in US, I agree to a certain extent that it is HARD to eat healthy but I disagree that it’s more expensive.
Allow me to be a reductionist but I think your point about “shaming” really boils down to whether we should have clear standards, laws, boundaries, ideals or morals. Whenever we draw a line and define right vs wrong, healthy vs fat, etc, there are bound to be in groups and out groups. Inevitably even if it starts out not as “shaming” but as health promotion or whatever palatable reason, eventually someone in the out group will perceive it as “shaming”. The bigger question is when is it ok to allow the need to protect someone’s feelings to demolish the boundary? And at what cost?
So the point of the hyperbole was to show that the abolishment of the bullying was done under the false pretext that no one should ever be bullied again. Again I am thinking it is not possible. To your point it really is boundaries until someone does get their feelings hurt. Boundaries are normal things in a societal agreement.
Therefore the anit-bully movement of a couple of years ago was really a boundary shift disguised as a movement for respect. Then they just cover for that fact by either saying that bullying the conservatives is necessary for the greater good, or that "well anti-vax can change their position it's not like race or orientation, things someone can't change." But they are quick to forget that some people do not want to change including some fat ones and when you attempt to coerce them knowing you are doing it in a negative matter it is bullying.
So in conclusion I was pointing out the people saying: don't bully (groups selected arbitrarily by us) you bigot, are a bunch of hypocrites. I'm getting really tired of it as I don't like hypocrites.
Oh yeah and the other side point I was making was just to point out that while it is not unreasonable to struggle against the cards you are dealt like trying to be heathier or thinner I just want to recognize that people are being sabotaged here because someone is making money. I am mad about that too.
