To be honest I use Linux Mint and a traditional desktop (KDE Plasma) on the home entertainment system and run 4k video in MPV. I have never been a big streamer and prefer to land a local copy using FTP (encrypted) from the seedbox (about 5 mins for a blue ray).
I have only just started to muck about with Kodi on a raspberry pi 4 build I was setting up for use by friends who are complete linux noobs. Ultraseedbox.com offer Plex/Emby/Jellyfin packages from about $17 or so a month.
I would rather be a linux dude and use LFTP in console to get a 10 part segmented download in a few minutes flat and then not worry about the net going out. Also, since I only watch movies on the home entertainment system I have never wanted a home server. So if you have some sort of network storage at home set up to stream PLEX etc to other devices you know more about it than me and I could not enlighten you regarding apps.
do you reccomend any home media server applications?
