Lynch was trying to do something different than episodic tv shows where victims of violence are basically anonymous and the show glazes over their life stories. Lynch spent a season and a half humanizing the victim, Laura Palmer. Her back story was explored in order to reveal the duality of her light and dark sides. The emotional effect of her loss was shown through many other characters.
