Movie was 1990. Tom Clancy wrote the novel in 1984. It was his first published. It got famous after President Reagan read it and said he liked it. Vlad Putin joined KGB in 1975, was in Moscow in 1984, and then East Germany from 1985-90.
Tom Clancy was ex-CIA. He wrote the novel in the same year Putin was in Moscow after which he moved to Germany. Somehow I feel there is more to it.

I heard it from Steve Pizcenik - the guy who said the election was a sting on AJ show the day after elections. He claimed that he helped Tom Clancy with some of the books and they got help from CIA. I got the impression that both of them were ex-CIA, or had CIA connections somehow
