How OP was surprised just shows no research was done by them.
I thought it was because grazing land is very scarce and expensive in Japan and it was more about the economics than the beef itself but it's supposedly good beef even though I think it's too fatty looking, that's just me though, I like some fat but that makes my chest hurt just looking at it.
So what would make their imported beef so much more spendy and to hold more value than ours?

I took Ag cpasses and I was in FFA and 4-H and learned about meat grading and different cuts and I beg to differ
So did I, back in the 80s, didn't your Ag teacher teach you anything about marbling? That's why the meat is so expensive.

Actually, no cows yet. Only birds so far that me son is raising
Did you research it? Shipping and raising process are high. Not like a local butchered meat animal.
Find a way to sample it. It is the best dish I ever had.
