Sincere Question. Did NK ever in its history allow Christians to worship God freely?

I heard yesterday that long ago they did. I heard also that Christians are not allowed in their country nowadays. They are persecuted.

Q said something once (I think) with regard to NK about "strings cut". What does that mean and what impact might that have?
