Those politicians weren't bought off, they were installed.

Ugh. You do realize it can be, and most likely IS, both, right?

They're made wealthy and influential in exchange for doing shitty stuff and being on the hook for said shitty stuff via blackmail etc. They stay in line or they get exposed. Staying in line keeps them wealthy.

One side bought. One side extorting. It isn't a difficult concept.
