I visited several times. And yes, I'm an American. I thought the Lake Chapala area was nice. The locals are kind and helpful. It's an english speaking community and there's an American Legion in town. It's been a few years since I've visited. Chapala is in Jalisco, so we were cautious. Just like anywhere USA, there are good and bad places. My mom still keeps in touch with the local families we met there.
It's very affordable! I was also very impressed with their medical and dental offices. State of the art! And the cost is 1/4 of what it is here. Chapala was interesting, it rained every evening and during the day it was perfect weather. :)
I was visiting relatives in Tucson and we drove to Nogales, Mexico to see a dentist. $55 to glue a crown back on. $35 for a cleaning. All patients go straight to a digital xray room where they have this super wide video monitor, and the results are put on their server and any dentist in one of like 30 cabins can access your xrays.
Nah, for the Fedeale just waste their time. They want quick cash and then to harass the next person.
Just ask for your court date & ticket again and again and when they realize you arent a victim they just take off. Time is money.
At least id youre American, they won't actually fuck with you.
src: Have Mexican wife and frequently travel there.

I was in Chapala last year, and Guadalajara. Indeed a very nice place!
Mexico has a stronger middle class than maybe even USA... at least you have a chance to afford a starter home with an entry level job.
