Maybe it is gunshot residue that only happens within a few feet in front of a fired gun. Thus, if a gunshot victim has stippling on their body, it would confirm they were standing very close to the person firing.

Which, if true would confirm that the gunshot victim was approaching or had approached very close to Kyle, meaning Kyle didn't premeditate the shot and shoot from far away, but only shot as the perp was rushing him and nearly on top of him when the trigger was pulled.
The diameter of the stipple would confirm the distance specifically, I think.
