I still regularly watch TOS. If he's always been gay, he's one hell of an actor because he didn't come off gay at all.

Something changed going into the movies however.

Sulu was great in Undiscovered Country. Maybe seeing it as a kid allows me to separate the character from what an insufferable nit the actor is.
