Absolutely, but my worry is that he may prejudice some jury members by his behaviour. A judge has to be strictly impartial and beyond reproach.
I get it and concur. But the law has very strict guidelines for good reason. At the end the judge will give directions to the jury by doing a summary of the proceedings (I guess the procedure is the same in the US as the UK). If his actions have caused any bias to be activated in them: people are biased, whether they know it or not - the smallest detail can turn them against someone, his directions may not be followed. Seen this happen in cases where a judge tried to push trough a verdict and the jury refused.
