Exactly what Stalin and the USSR did -- first to allow abortion, all women in the work place, state child care -- and even two incomes could not support a family.
Alcoholism and significantly reduced life span esp for men.
I was told that during the Solidarity backlash in Poland vodka was pretty well all that was available in shops. People who managed to get out were skeletal; their stomachs were so badly shrunk they could not eat anything approaching proper meals for days.
My mom was in Poland during 1978 and 1980. She lost more than 20 lbs being there because food was so scarce, and she was already a thin person so by the time she left you could see her ribs below her collarbone. They had to boil their water to even make it close to drinkable. Having a Coke at a restaurant was a real luxury. Ice was a non-existent idea, especially in summer. Her being American immediately put a target on her back while being there and honestly I think she's lucky she made it out of there and went back again.
Anecdotally, We were able to make it on one income with 4 children, who were very close in age. One thing I always noticed people would look at me like I was crazy for having 4 so close in age.. I even had busy bodies in the store ask if they were all mine. They very much looked alike. Obviously related.. It was hard not to be sarcastic and respond with..".no where did these come from"
Another part, the unspoken pressure to have a career too.. like raising and teaching your own children is not ok enough. The so called feminists have done more damage than can be quantified easily.. Support women in their choices Not abortion...Career,Children or both..... It was very challenging to have 4 kids on one income not a lot of luxuries back then. But I can't imagine life without them. I would do it all again but better if I had known then what I know now.
I still resent the way the tax system makes it very difficult to get by on one very good income because they have already taken over 1/3 away in taxes. Just return that money and we could more than take care of our family and still be charitable with our giving....
I would like to see a strengthening of the traditional family unit.
