When it's just a typo, the person knew the correct spelling but hit the wrong key. When it's a misspelling, that's how they thought it was supposed to be spelled.
BTW an error close to this happens when people write "whinning" instead of whining. One time means nothing. When they do it multiple times, it's a clue that they think it has the double N.
