That type of art (I don't know the term for it) was popular in the 60s, for example see the credits of The Fearless Vampire Killers.

PS - 1997 isn't 'old'!! I was only 18 myself then I'll have you know 😳

Some people who report Near Death Experiences have talked about being in a dark environment where all they could see were eyeballs around them. I suppose that is the inspiration for this type of art.

I hadn't heard that, and I've had a few NDEs that were nothing but warm, golden light and overwhelming peacefulness.

What that album cover reminds ME of is either someone being severed in half while people watch, or an allusion to MK Ultra... Which, frankly, is about the same thing as the former.
