Q: I’ve heard claims that the Red Cross refuses to accept convalescent plasma from individuals who have received a COVID-19 vaccine because it wipes out the antibodies. Is this true?
A: There are claims circulating that incorrectly state that the Red Cross will not accept convalescent plasma donations from those who have received the COVID-19 vaccine because “the vaccine wipes out those antibodies making the convalescent plasma ineffective in treating other COVID-19 patients.” This is not accurate.
Due to the decline in hospital demand and because the Red Cross and our industry partners have been able to build a sufficient supply of convalescent plasma to meet the foreseeable needs of COVID-19 patients the Red Cross stopped collecting convalescent plasma completely on June 14.
They changed it. Early this year, around Jan or Feb they did state on their website that they would not accept convalescent plasma from vaccinated individuals. They changed it a few days later. A few news stations picked it up and they are still out there if you search (February), but now it’s mostly “fact checkers”.
“Officials say the vaccine depletes antibodies created by a person’s body that has successfully recovered from COVID-19. As a result, their plasma is no longer useful to someone critically ill with the virus. Convalescent plasma therapy was authorized by the FDA to be used by people suffering from COVID-19.”
Thank you. I had heard a commercial this summer on the radio looking for unvaxxed donors -- specifically for plasma. It was my mistake for not looking at the age if this Dr's tweet, but I will say I still have grave concerns about donating to the RC and do not trust them.
