I don't think they ever had a work ethic because they believe faith without works is good enough. I guess they skip this part in the Bible: "So faith if by itself, if it has no works, is dead." James 2:17 (and the verse is even a Qincidence) but I think they skip it because their daddy Luther threw that book out of the Bible because he didn't like it based on his own failings as a Christian.
