Can confirm I briefly heard about the cell signals disappearing but then COVID COVID COVID IS HERE news cycles started running and it absolutely drowned out the missing people. (I thought it was more like 2 mil not 21mil but I definitely remember) And no, I wasn't here, I didn't start looking over here to GAW until much later.
