Why was it so important to prosecution to win?

Sure it was high profile and controversial, but why did the prosecution go as far to even endanger their careers?

They knew they couldn't win. They just needed the show to gen up the ensuing riots. Their op didn't go as planned, since Kyle was supposed to be murdered by Grosskreutz who got his gun from the FBI after his release. They were trying to salvage something out of it.
