So.. how do they 'spot' a new strain.. and why would the equipment, labs, supercomputers, electron microscopes, and researchers to do this be located for some reason in one random african country? All of which were just sitting around there doing nothing until they just stumbled over this thing and so happened to leap into action to flash the bat signal and ring the bell?

For that matter, to date nobody has said how delta is different from any other form, or any of the other purported variants either. But somehow immediately they know this about the brand new one? Is saying 'it could be the worst thing evar!!' the same sort of hyperbole as warning people they might be struck by a falling supernova the next time they take a walk in the park?
