Iodine deficiency is a huge problem in the West that gets absolutely no attention. I was taught that iodine deficiency, like most nutritional deficient states, only occurs in third world counties. Since deficiency is not considered a public health issue here in the US, allopathic medical education does not focus on the subject - the focus is on pharmacological symtomaic control for chronic disease. Nutritional deficiency states as causation for modern disease is not even considered.
