A group of Jews perjured themselves before a Roman court to instigate the murder of their own God in the flesh. So they were at least as guilty as Pilate the Roman governor, and far more guilty than Roman soldiers following orders.
Pilate gave orders after trying to back out of it. He found no fault with Jesus. Pharisees pushed him farther than he wanted to go with it but in the end he still gave the order.

But I thought "just following orders" is never a valid excuse?
