Congrats! Are you raising burley or dark? Dark is usually fired. That's why they call it dark fired. Burley is air cured. Get with another farmer who raises it so they can show you or tell you how dark-fired is done. Also, you have to keep close watch on these barns as they will/can catch fire. Lots of farmers lose their tobacco crop that way.
Good luck.
WHOA!!! I was just thinking about farmers & barn fires last nite!!! I spent most of yesterday fast-tracking my research & planning my project. Learned a LOT. Anyway, yeah I got some Burley strains and Virginia Gold. Also got some Conneticut shade cuz my property in Smokies-foorhills has lots of trees and direct sun is an issue. I definitely want to air cure vs flu/smoke cure due to the barn fire issue. Not looking to make chew or pipe/cigar product, but mainly a blend for cigarettes. I love Plant Science projects!!
I pray you all the luck on your new upcoming adventure. So you're in Tennessee in the Great Smokies. My husband, his mother and I went to Pigeon Forge, Dollywood, and Sevierville one summer. It was shortly after they'd had their forest fire/ which I think was fairly RARE for that area and the mountainside looked black and devastated. But we still had a great time.
Since you have a background in plant/horticulture; you should do an EXCELLENT job on your tobacco crop. Just keep in mind that you may need some help from farm hands (we use Mexicans) around here; unless you have a large family of kids. That usually cost alot out of your end profit.
Anyway, good luck and God bless. If you have any questions: I AM NOT AN EXPERT; I will try to find the answer for you. Feel free to ask me at anytime. Have a great week. P.S. I just heard that Jack Dorsey from Twitter stepped DOWN. Hurray!
Regarding Jack…yeah the movie’s gettin good!!! Anyway, this will be a small operation regarding tobacco. If it works out, who knows? It’s not exactly “popular” so I’m not banking on anything from it. I just want to find a blend I enjoy, and cut down on my habit’s expenses. On the beans tho…THAT might be something to expand on as I’m focusing on fava beans. Not an American favorite but Arabs love them. I might find a niche market?
My husband George still smokes too. He was talking about raising him enough to last throughout the year to cut down on costs. But with the way he huffs and puffs, he'd be better off quitting. However I can not make him; he will have to WANT to quit like I did. Actually the Lord helped me quit and I am grateful for it everyday. Anyway, I'm sure you'll do fine and you will probably make a good crop with some fava beans; which I've never ate. But I'm sure they are delicious. God bless.
I also bought a bunch of beans. Heirloom seeds to stockpile 👍🏽
Good for you. Sounds like you've made a plan for the future. God bless.
