Do you remember Bread discussing project Looking Glass, and Palantir's massive government contracts? This might sound like sci-fi theories, but if we assume that there is a "looking glass" into the future with general (doesn't have to be pinpoint specific) knowledge of events that will or are very likely to occur, (could simply just be predictive algorithms based on historical data trends) AND combine that with advanced AI tech along with human researchers/analysts (gov, military, civilian dogooders), it would be quite practical for somebody or some group to essentially pick who will come to the island, the "chosen", and root out the weeds...
Yes, it is odd that Norman is gone and hasn't returned after that ban. Just like it was odd that ExpertBread and NotExpertBread disappeared. Odd that accounts, "friends" of Norman (CHAOS_ACTUAL and IAN_MacIntosh) have gone silent...
So, in LOST, Jacob needs to find a new protector of the island. For centuries he attempts to identify a suitable replacement. In the modern age, he travels off the island to find people and help "encourage" their life paths that will eventually lead them to end up on the island. Some considered potential candidates. Everything that follows is basically testing to see who can prove to be good. It's revealed that Jacob has some supernatural machine to observe the lives of potential candidates through a setup of mirrors and if I remember correctly a navigational apparatus, which is kept in an ancient structure built by the Egyptians called the Lighthouse. There's also eventually a Looking Glass station built underwater used to house a submarine that can be used by those on the island to connect to the "real" outside world.
As for this AI we're theorizing about in our "real" (?) world, I agree that it's not so much "magic" but predictive analytics through assessing likely reactions to hypothetical events and scenarios. Using programs based on character traits, qualities, observed prior responses etc in "subjects", computer simulations could be run to determine potential responses by said subjects. The AI would be most useful for data collection, but could also be used to run algorithmic testing.
These ideas also make me think of Enders Game and The Giver, as well as Divergent. Very interesting how many books, shows and movies incorporate similar ideas.
