Strictly, he invented the PCR process which was never intended to be a test. Its job was just to replicate and make more of something.

We know he seriously disliked Fauci who had been involved with HIV/AIDS since the 1980s. Imagine all the funding he must have received or controlled over that time. We have also heard stories about supposed treatments harming patients. Then there was the issue of trying to find the actual virus. Does history repeat?

Mullis's death right before the COVID-19 outbreak where his process was about to be misused would certainly not have gone unremarked by Nobel Prizewinning Mullis. His death would have been extremely convenient to anyone trying to pass off PCR as a virus diagnostic.
