That is a legitimate concern. Even ignoring entire books being edited in/out over the centuries, just the language complexities alone are a maze.
I'm bilingual and see every day how translations are necessarily distorted, just by the underlying structural differences between languages. Even when the translator is doing their level best to keep distortions to a minimum, you still have to make subjective judgement calls in every sentence.
(Machine translation is like a petri dish for seeing what translations without common sense can turn out like.)
Add to the mix that it's usually a dead language you're wrangling, with the entrenched politics inherent in an organized religion, and good luck with that.
The only good translation is a dead translation.
