I'll give you that but who's more believable: someone who acts like a raging lunatic or someone who behaves in a more reasonable fashion? In my small circle, anybody who acts like Jones is either going to get ignored, decked or shot.
I don't follow or enjoy listening to Jones. Yet if I believed what he claims to believe and had any care at all for my fellow man, I'm not sure how I couldn't be a raging eternally frustrated and pissed off kind of person... like he appears to be.
Civility in form is a kind of apathy, or realization that you have limits on what you can or are willing to do. While I certainly appreciate it, I wouldn't call it a higher trait than compassion. There are times when it's right to be incivil, and saving the world or others is a good place to start. The biggest issue there is that people don't agree on things. So in essence, you or I may not appreciate Jones because we don't agree on key areas of "fact". Not that he comes across as a raging lunatic.
How a person sounds is not relevant. What they say is.

In my circle heβd fit in well at a backyard barbecue.
