There are people out there claiming this was all a publicity stunt to get their organisation noticed etc.

At what point in their thought process (assuming this is true and they aren't glowies) did they think that looking like feds would somehow work in their favour?

Sure, they got media attention and now we know what they are called, but we all now associate them with being glowies.
