Development of the aircraft carrier spelled the end of the battleship as viable warship. They needed casualties though, and the battleships were left behind, intentionally.
None of the class of battleships destroyed that day ever did anything useful in the war, they were all WW1 vintage and the enemy had superior technology. They all would have been sunk in combat if not at the harbor that day. Not that I approve at all, just an interesting fact.
