I will never forget as both my grandfathers served in the Pacific. 1 was a medical supply runner for front line medics on both the taking of Iwo Jima and Saipan. The other was in the first Platoon to arrive in Japan to navigate the dangers of disarming a people that with exception for the main island, did not know they had officially surrendered. And that took weeks of village to village, town to town, being shot at and having to put interpreters on the line explaining Japan had surrendered.
