In the 70's there was a genre called disaster films, Posidan Adventure, Towering Inferno come to mind. These are modern day disaster films

If by disaster you mean, metaphorically, to shit ones pants in a crowded room? Then yes, that equates to these films: embarassing, awkward, no way to salvage, and they stink.
