I haven't confirmed one way or the other, but if you search images you can see that at McCain they do tighten the flag eventually with some sort of cable. So there could be stages to the ceremony, where the flag is loose and gets tightened.
Maybe someone from our military can confirm when the flag should be tightened up and whether we could expect it to have any creases in this ceremony?
My husband performed the honor guard duties in the Marine Corp. As I was reading this out loud to him he bowed his head and I could see the emotion on his face. He said you were a lucky man to have only done it 3 times as he did it about half a dozen and of those times that only once he handed the flag over to the family member. He said that is the hardest thing in the world. His grandfather, both of my grandfathers and an uncle of mine have all had military funerals and I can tell you this, when you hear the sound of the rifles fire and when taps starts playing it is one of the most moving moments and every time I have experienced it I have been brought to tears for all those that have past on before. Anyone that can attend a military funeral and not be moved at all has no soul in my fair opinion. Thank you for your service!!!
Thanks fren I saved your post as it was excellent.
Given that, would it be fair to say the flags at these funerals are not up to standard? Also, are you familiar with the step where the flag is secured with some type of line, around the circumference of the coffin?
You're welcome. I think we'll begin to realize this country does have values and tradition and we just need to tune out the media to begin to appreciate it.
Thank you for posting this.
Beautiful and almost brings tears to my eyes reading it.
The respect, the precision, the discipline.
