I hear you.
My father says “a child becomes the adult they will turn into by age 8”. He means the morals and values they are taught by that point mean everything as it’s their foundation. He’s not wrong. My kids had a solid time then and we kept them close & taught them to work hard - that working hard provided more than the outcome. They get legit proud of cleaning rooms or being together to accomplish something. Material goods sort of mean nothing. They can be fun but there isn’t a need for material things.
Their freinds as they get older see more and more value in material and it’s so boring to my kids. Almost disapointing
Truth.
One of the things I wish I had listened to was to get to know the mother of my wife before I married her. Her mothers habits and way of looking at things - good road map to what the upbringing was. My wife is a clutter bug and it takes a toll on me mentally. She also didn’t have a dad around and feels generally threatened my masculinity shows. It’s wild watching her because she gets so uncomfortable - yet she is torn because my kids ( and especially my son ) respond to it rapidly and seem to crave it.
She still doesn’t get it so - not sure where to go. Divorce and my own non-cluttered space or not. I can’t martyr myself and stay sane - my kids don’t need to see that. She isn’t giving me much of a choice.
Ah now we get to the heart of it.
Being a father is accepting that you out your heart on a table very day even if it means they get half a bite and it’s all you have.
Then you wake up and do it all again.
No thanks expected or given - then one day it’s there in an unspoken respect nature provides.
