I don't know why they are testing it on the other side of the world.
The problem with using lasers as a weapon has been that once the laser starts to penetrate, the smoke attenuates the strength of the beam. Also, if you make your surfaces perfectly reflective, the laser will do nothing but bounce off.
Perhaps they are putting this out there to function like a laser light does with cats...
I worked with high power lasers in grad school. I used a laser powerful enough to set things on fire. The laser used so much power we had to build a plumbing system with 3/4" pipe which ran at full capacity.
Point it at piece of wood and it will catch fire. Point at a mirror an the beam bounces off and doesn't do a thing to a mirror. In fact we had an optical table and ran the beam all over the place with mirrors.
Sounds like fun.
It totally was.
I just had a magnifying glass. u/#Peperain
So just to be more clear, if you made a laser weapon system to stop hypersonic missiles for example..
All the enemy would have to do have to do is make a mirror finish on their missiles using chrome or some other way. Perhaps our military has figured out a way around this.
All mirrors have thermal limits and they do not handle various wavelengths the same.
Yeah I was thinking they might have figured a way to that makes it difficult or impossible to make a surface that can efficiently reflect the beam at certain frequencies or or a mix of wavelengths.
But the laser we were using was really powerful and the mirrors had zero problems as long as we kept them clean.

Holy shit I was exactly right.
Thanks fren you made my day.

They're only now announcing public tests.
Gotta wonder, how long have we had this?
"Forest fires" that burn homes but leave other trees and cars alone should tell you everything you need to know.
If they can cook us, they can freeze us.
Could have drawn a dick on Mars' surface with one of those
Sounds like something Elon would do.
