Putin reminds me of other dictators like Libya's Gaddafi who, while brutal and corrupt, actually showed concern for the people of their country. Those rare birds mostly get taken out (via invasion, engineered revolution, assassination, or false charges etc) by the West, but Russia and its military are too large for that, apparently.
Trump was forging a friendship with Putin and with Russia; now Russia and China are apparently getting cozy because America's a threat to both. With China, that makes sense: they've been at war with us, stealthily, for years. With Russia, not so much: we have enough common ground (despite frequent disagreements) that we should be trading partners, not enemies.
Needllessly making enemies of major, nuclear powers is not a good idea. And turning America into a police state that gets schooled on basic freedoms by the likes of Putin is . . . a nightmare.
Whatever apparent friendship Russia has with China is temporary at best. A rumor I heard through the Chinese grapevine is that Xi Jinping wants to genocide Mongolia because of its strategic location re: missiles and so forth. As such Mongolia has allied with Russia, who will inevitably oppose China once there is cause for open conflict.
It was the same way in the 1950s and 60s. Russia appeared to be cozy with China but it never lasted.
