I’m fairly sure the main purpose of this is to make it easy to locate and count the dead.

I'm sure it helped but the main purpose was to get you away from the glass when the pressure wave hit.like civil preparedness we no longer do this.

Yeah, definitely good point on the broken glass and windows. Any entryway, even an open doorway, that can act as a bottleneck for a pressure wave.
