Just listen to Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" album (well, CD now), and you might consider giving jazz another chance :)
It was an acquired taste for me; probably like how I couldn't stand beer in High School and thought Budweiser was extremely strong at the time :) (I recently had a can after about 40 years and thought it was about as strong as Coors light :) )
I started with liking Pink Floyd and King Krimson, and Steely Dan, and then went to "Return to Forever" and "Weather Report", and later to what is considered "real jazz". I may have grown into it because my Dad played jazz albums when I was growing up (but I hated it then :) ).
There's a really good documentary on Jaco on Netflix (can't remember the name).
I never really liked (or could comprehend) lyrics in most rock songs, so instrumental music is what I really like, with jazz being the main one.
