Maybe try: Hooking it up to your linux box and extract the data with android-tools
thanks for the suggestion, will look into that/gives me hope. don't know a lot about fixing computers, but 'extracting' makes more sense than fixing the screen. afraid if I hand it over to someone they'll make it worse.
