thanks for the suggestion, will look into that/gives me hope. don't know a lot about fixing computers, but 'extracting' makes more sense than fixing the screen. afraid if I hand it over to someone they'll make it worse.

This place has many kits that include the tools you need like tiny screwdrivers and prybars with good tutorials.
My gf was so eager to get her shit working again she got mad I wasn't doing it for her and even though she's not tech savy at all she did a good job on her own.
