I just got an email from a local non-profit saying they are closed until January 15th due to staffing shortages. And, everywhere I look... same thing... "now hiring" .
Some people are home because they are quarantined, but, that many? No way.
Perhaps the workforce has shrunk because some fear working and being exposed to covid?
Or because they are making more money via unemployment?
Or because they had to quit or get the jab, and they chose to quit?
Other reasons? What is going on? The lack of employees everywhere is very concerning... it's just resulting in more division. I wish I had a solution.
Gen Z has stepped up and are filling the customer service jobs. But they are mostly high schoolers and college students so their availability is limited. What they are reporting is that customers are either super nice or total assholes - there is nothing in between. The assholes scream, curse, and try to assault the kids because they are upset about shortages and/or reduced hours. Apparently the police are aware of this and will randomly drop into stores and ask the kids if everything is Ok (I imagine some of them have kids who are working retail) The super nice people thank the kids for showing up and trying to do their best in a bad situation.
I was unaware of this. Great insight. And, I have made it a point to try to tip handsomely when I am out. I want to reward work ethic.
i love tipping well. tipped my pizza guy 35% last night ($10 tip) and he fucking lit up. made my night making his night
What's great is that most of the kids lean conservative so when one of the customers starts raging about shortages, some of the kids will quietly say "Welcome to communism lite!"
