Ah but the sentence structure of that sentence is "very 17th Century", and includes a "Whereas" statement about militias, so those who do not like that right claim that it is about militias. Anyone who has ever read a contract knows that is not correct (most [all?] contracts begin with the "Whereas" statements, and these do not flow into other statements, ipso facto).
And then also I like the people who say it only applies to black powder single shot weapons. Which demonstrates a level of pedantry that they of course do not apply to any other right in the Bill of Rights (otherwise, for example, there would be no concept of Freedom of Speech on the internet). It also happens to be a-historical, as there were multi-shot weapons at that time. And that interpretation would also ironically (and I would say properly) recognize my right to own and use cannons and mortars. :)
Also, fuck them. I do not recognize their authority over my rights.
Yes the 'jäger rifle" became the PA rifle, and then the TN rifle.
But we had "volley guns" and other stuff at the time as well. And the multi-shot/"repeating" Girandoni air rifle made famous by Lewis & Clark's expedition was available at the time of the Constitution's creation.
Also, I don't care. The right of self-defense has no limit.
Here here...fuck them...one and all.
