JA and AA had some issues on points of Christian orthodoxy, but nonetheless we're self-described Christians and "church going animals." JQA broke with his parents and defended the Trinitarian explanation of the Godhead as paradox and a divine mystery that even if not comprehendable by the human mind, was nevertheless true because the Bible evidences it.
JA groomed his favorite son for politics, with eyes on the presidency, early on in his childhood. JQA led quite the noble, patriotic life full of dedication to civil service. His presidency is greatly underrated since nothing too "major" happened during it (boring is good!) and he was arguably thr greatest diplomat this country ever had.
thanks for clarifying, I knew I should have used a word other than devout, but wasn't able to search. a couple of fascinating guys that's for sure. especially JQA and the antimasonic party, I really need to read more about him.
Happy to help. Both were absolutely devout, as in, they loved theology and subscribed to some form of Christianity, believing and professing themselves to be Christians. Both are fascinating and greatly underappreciated Founders. The HBO miniseries John Adams is a good start if you're interested in them. Many of their writings are available in various free online databases, especially the Mass Historical Society.
